Local SEO basics for small businesses in Devon

A plain-English guide to showing up when people nearby search for what you do, without tricks or jargon.

Local SEO simply means helping your business appear when people near you search for what you offer – "electrician Paignton", "cleaner near me", "MOT Newton Abbot". You do not need to be a technical expert to get the basics right.

1. Say clearly what you do and where

Search engines can only match you to a search if your website actually says the thing. Put your main service and your main town in your page titles and headings, written naturally: "Domestic cleaning in Torquay" is far more useful than "Welcome to our website".

2. Give each main service its own page

One page that lists ten services is hard to rank for any of them. A separate page for each main service, with a proper explanation, photos and FAQs, gives each one a fair chance.

3. Cover your areas honestly

If you work across several towns, a page for each can help – but only if each page says something genuinely useful about working there, such as jobs you have done locally. Copy-and-paste pages with the town name swapped are not helpful to anyone.

4. Set up your Google Business Profile

For many local searches, the map results appear above the normal results. Your Google Business Profile is what appears there, so it needs to be complete, accurate and active. (See our separate post on Google Business Profile tips.)

5. Keep your name, address and phone consistent

Use exactly the same business name, address and phone number on your website, Google profile, Facebook page and any directories. Inconsistent details make it harder for search engines to be confident they are all the same business.

6. Ask for reviews

Reviews help customers decide and are part of how local results are judged. The simplest approach is to ask happy customers straight after a job, with a direct link that makes it easy.

7. Make the site fast and mobile-friendly

Most local searches happen on phones. A site that loads slowly or is fiddly to use on a small screen loses people before they read a word.

None of this is a quick trick, and nobody can honestly promise you the top spot. But getting these basics right puts you in a much stronger position than many local competitors.
