A website is not something you build once and forget. Out-of-date details put customers off, and neglected software can become a security risk. The good news is that keeping on top of it takes very little time if you have a routine.
Every month
- Send yourself a test enquiry through your form and check it arrives
- Check your phone number, email and opening hours are still correct
- Add a photo or two of recent work
- Reply to any new Google reviews
Every few months
- Read through your main pages as if you were a customer. Is anything out of date – services you no longer offer, old team members, past offers?
- Check the site on your own phone for anything that looks broken
- Make sure software, plugins or themes are updated if your site uses them
- Check your Google Business Profile matches your website
Every year
- Renew your domain name (set it to auto-renew so it can never lapse)
- Review which pages bring enquiries and whether a new service page or area page would help
- Update your copyright year and any legal or privacy wording
Back it up
Make sure there is a recent backup of your site that someone can restore. If you are not sure whether there is, find out now rather than after something goes wrong.
Or hand it over
If this sounds like one more job you do not have time for, a hosting and maintenance arrangement means someone else keeps the site secure, backed up and up to date, and you just send over the changes you want.
